Kitchen science

October 30, 2008 · No Comments

Today we had a science afternoon. We broke into 4 group to conduct experiments using ingredients that can be found in the kitchen. We did 2 experiments: Making a lava lamp and a milk experiment.
Mrs Leung had typed up the experiment on a card and we had to read it in our group and then follow the instructions. Some groups REALLY struggled with remembering to READ it all first BEFORE we poured things in or stirred things!
By the time we got to our second experiment we had improved HEAPS! We learnt some really interesting things about oil and water and detergent and milk.

Voices of the World

October 20, 2008 · No Comments

We have we have recently discovered an ultra cool wiki- Voices of the World. Each month this site puts up a new challenge for the class to do with their voices. In October the challenge is to create a Voki (visit www.voki.com) and record our voices saying the Voices of the World sentence. It is really interesting listening to the voices from the other places around the world. After listening to all of their voices we realised how strong our Australian accent it!

Visit the wiki at www.http://votw.wikispaces.com/

We will be working on a Voki for our class his week (once we have a vote to see which animal to use and we will upload here when we are done.

Advertising Webquest

October 15, 2008 · No Comments

We have started our first webquest. A webquest is an inquiry-based lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web.
Our webquest is about advertising. (This is our topic for the term.) Here is the challenge for our webquest:
Congratulations! You have been hired by ‘The Magical Marketing Company’ to develop an advertising campaign for their latest product- a tin of pet rocks. ‘The Magical Marketing Company’ is very well known in the business for the amount of research they do before they make each advertisement. Selling tins of pet rocks will not be easy and you will need to do research to find out what the best marketing strategies are for selling products to the intended audience-kids.
Because it is the first advertisement you have made for “The Magical Marketing Company’ the Marketing Executive (your new boss) has asked you to develop a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate what you think the most effective advertising strategy will be for their new product. Your new boss will then look at your presentation and decide if they want you to go ahead and develop the advertisement for their product.

SuperclubsPLUS

October 1, 2008 · No Comments

We have not used our blog for a while because we have been too busy using SuperclubsPLUS. www.superclubsplus.com

SuperclubsPLUS is a safe kids online learning community for 6-12 year olds. It provides students with a secure environment in which to chat and email other students from around the world, build personal homepages, contribute to online magazines and participate in exciting online events such as Expert Hotseats.

Teachers can use Superclubs in their classrooms to teach students about internet safety, netiquette, blogging and digital literacies (when is it ok to use text talk, when isn’t it?). On top of all this, students are encouraged to develop Project Pages and work towards achieving their Star Awards (working through a series of activities related to learning ICT skills). For ease of teacher assessment these awards are all mapped to the VELS curriculum. A must have program for all schools!

Our teacher Mrs Leung is a mediator on this website- she had to do intense training for 6 days to become a mediator.

Nike+ Challenge

September 26, 2008 · No Comments

In our class we have been using 5 ipods. We split into groups to use the ipods. We put a sensor on our shoe and it records how far we run. We set up a challenge for each iPod and at the end of the day we loaded it onto the computer (using iTunes) to see which ipod was winning. The most that someone ran in a day was Carly, who ran 16km!!

You can see the results from our first challenge as a widget in the sidebar.

Nike Run Program

We have recently purchased 19 iPods for use in our school. Our class is lucky enough to be trialling the

new iPods with the Nike run program. We will be using the iPods and shoe sensors to monitor our activity

levels and graph these results.

We are VERY excited about using this great new technology! Stay tuned for more news about this.

Have a look at our Google Earth! This gigantic display in currently on our classroom wall.
Students have made 3D models of festivals they are learning about and pinned them on the Earth.

This has proved to be an interesting learning activity for lots of people because we have discovered that not many people know where the countries are!
